Catalogue number M-001: the first record on Metroplex, the label Juan Atkins started in Detroit in 1985 after Cybotron split, and the first under his Model 500 name. Stripped of Cybotron’s rock and pop ties, it is often called the first techno record. Atkins said it sold better in Chicago than at home. Jeff Mills played it on Detroit radio and the Chicago house DJs picked it up, making it a hit in both cities. When it reached Britain, it helped lead to Virgin’s Techno! compilation. In 2022 Rolling Stone put it at 94 among the greatest dance songs of all time. Filed in memory of Juan Atkins (1962–2026).
