Where it starts. Juan Atkins and Richard ‘Rik’ Davis — who signed himself 3070 — formed Cybotron in Detroit in 1980 and pressed this debut on Atkins’s own Deep Space Records. Picked up by The Electrifying Mojo on Detroit radio, its cold machine funk and lyrics about isolation and a city being rewired by technology carried the duo well beyond the city, and pointed the way to everything Detroit techno became. Filed in memory of Juan Atkins (1962–2026).
